Great
trolls are not at all like an average troll. They are giant humanoids resembling
a green-skinned cross between a human and an elf. Great trolls are built like a
human with pointed ears like an elf's. They have smooth, emerald-green skin and
dark forest-green hair and their features are thought to be quite beautiful. All
great trolls are male.
They
are nocturnal and often live in ruins deep within forests. Long ago, the great
trolls enslaved many of the other races and built a great civilization. They are
such skilled weaponsmiths that the gods themselves often had trolls create items
for their faithful. The great trolls betrayed the god, Kinsu. The weapon they
made for him sapped the Kinsu's power and transferred the power to the troll
that forged it, however, the Kinsu was able to thwart the troll's plan. After
stopping the trolls from stealing his power, the Kinsu and his wife Telule
cursed the greater trolls. The Kinsu facet of the curse is their inability to go
out into sunlight. If their skin is exposed to sunlight they turn to stone. The
second, even more devastating, part of the curse caused all great troll
pregnancies to end with a common troll tearing out of the great troll female's
womb. This caused the females either to die in childbirth or eventually die of
old age. The male great trolls were able to survive by mating with other
humanoids. The children from such a union are always greater trolls (if male) or
trollborn (if female). Great trolls can also mate with common trolls, the
children of such a union are always common trolls.
Combat
Great
trolls often ally themselves with common trolls. If a group of common trolls
fights with unusual precision look for a hidden great troll leader. The great
trolls can command common trolls at will and will often have several troll
servants.
Great
trolls are very magical creatures. Any weapon they use will be at least +1 and
most will have other abilities as well. Any weapon they use will normally be of
the large variety (two-handed types, sized for their use). They usually wear
light armor such as a chain shirt (often of the magical variety (5%)).
Spells:
The magic of great trolls is powerful. All great trolls cast spells as
a 8th level sorcerer.
Regeneration
(Ex): Acid and light (see below) deals normal damage to a great troll.
If
a great troll loses a limb or body part, the lost portion regrows in 3d6
minutes. The creature can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to
the stump.
Daylight
Petrification (Su): The curse of daylight petrification is the downfall
of most great trolls. If a great troll's skin is exposed to sunlight they must
make a fortitude save (DC 30) each round (until they can get out of the sun) or
turn to stone.
Immunities
(Ex): Unlike
common trolls, great trolls love fire. They are immune to fire damage.
Light
Susceptibility (Su): Great trolls are extraordinarily susceptible to
magical light. A light spell causes any roll made by a greater troll to be at a
-4 penalty. A daylight spell, however, is even more dangerous. When within the
radius of a daylight spell, a greater troll has the standard -4 to all rolls and
takes 1-2 hp of damage per round.
Skills:
Great
trolls receive a +2 racial bonus to hide checks, and a +8 to any metalworking
craft skill.
Great Troll Characters
A
great troll’s favored class is sorcerer. Great trolls do not become divine
spellcasters because their previous dealings with the gods burned them so bad.
