Background

The infant later known as Grafton Mahler was found abandoned in Deepwood by Alovain Featherstone, an elven ranger working for Woodwatch. Alovain saved the nearly dead child and decided to raise the child as her own. Alovain spent the next twelve years living on the edge of Deepwood with the half-orc boy. She taught him the ways of the forest, how to protect himself, and how to hunt and gather food. Grafton learned slowly, but he would never give up until he was satisfied.

One afternoon, Grafton overheard one of his adopted mother's Woodwatch friends mentioning that there were some unlicensed loggers in the area and he asked her if she could check it out. She left the following morning, telling Grafton that she would return the following day. She never returned.

Grafton searched the area for Alovain, but instead he found some men loading a wagon with a darkwood log. When they saw the young ranger, they attacked. Grafton fought them off, but they were too tough for him. He fled into the forest. 

He stayed at the cottage for four months before he decided that Alovain wasn't going to return. Alovain had told Grafton stories of her travels and the stories of her time in Eareth and Elf Friend, so he decided to travel to the village of Elf Friend...
